Cichlids in the Rio Puerto Viejo: Astatheros rostratus

Astatheros rostratus is one of the medium-sized cichlids. It is a substrate-sifter. The presence of numerous pits in the soft substrate is a sure sign that one or more rostratus are in the area: the pits are left when a rostratus feeds. It takes a mouthful of dirt, sifts through it to extract the good stuff (insects, leaves), then spits out the rest.
