I have had the good fortune to make nine visits to the rainforests of northeastern Costa Rica to study cichlids. I first went in the summer of 1989, and then returned in March 1996, March 1997, March 1998, March 1999, October 1999, April 2000, November 2000 and May 2001. This has given me the opportunity to study intensively the cichlid fishes found in a 1 km section of the Rio Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica.
